The quaint fishing village of Kalk Bay has a colourful main road lined with heritage buildings. These are jam-packed with antique stores, art galleries and craft shops, which make fascinating browsing. There are also quirky shops in the side roads off the main road, where you'll get to see more of the heritage houses and artists' studios in Kalk Bay.

If you want to stop for a bite, there's a wide selection of great restaurants here, from Italian to Portuguese, sidewalk cafés to harbour-side fine dining. The well-known Brass Bell restaurant is as close as you can get to the breakers without immersing yourself in the water.

In the afternoons, the fishing boats come back into Kalk Bay Harbour with their catches, so be sure to stroll down and haggle for your seafood supper with one of the charismatic fish mongers.

Past Kalk Bay is St James, filled with beautiful old Victorian and Cape Dutch homes, with its own little beach famous for its colourful beach huts, and glorious views across the bay.

End your coastal exploration off in Muizenberg, a short drive from St James. Muizenberg beach has one of the longest wave breaks in the world, perfect for novice surfers and safe for swimming. There is a great selection of beachside restaurants, from where you can enjoy all the surfing action and soak up the sweeping views across False Bay.
