Discover Cape Town’s best kept secret

Cape Town’s best kept secret is that in winter, the Mother City shows off a different side to her.

Winter is a time of wonder, a lush green paradise with perfect rose gold sunsets. Frolicking whales at sea and the Cape flora in all its colourful glory. Its a perfect time to get out and explore the great outdoors and discover the nature of the Western Cape.

With an endless variety of things to do, see, and explore; here are a few of our favourites:

  • Get the blood flowing and up the endorphins with a mountain hike.
  • Spot some whales.
  • Surf’s up – winter brings great surfing conditions.
  • Discovery magical winter sunsets.
  • Go for High Tea at the Mount Nelson for a comforting cup of hot tea and delectable selection of treats.
  • Have lunch at a wine farm in front of a big hearty fireplace.
  • Up your cultural intake and visit an art gallery.

A relaxing holiday can lead to mindfulness

mindfulness/ˈmʌɪn(d)f(ʊ)lnəs/: live in the present moment … be intentionally more aware and fully engaged in what is happening in one’s surroundings.

Be present and stay present; it’s much much easier said than done.

It’s important to choose your surroundings carefully … life has many distractions; the world today is fast paced with so much going on in our lives.

Self-care is a modern luxury and crucial to our well being – barefoot on the white sand seems the perfect place for it. Fresh mountain water, home cooked meals, a cup of coffee, indulging in a great book with your toes in the sand or a simple walk on the beach.

What better way to start this self-care than by taking a well-deserved holiday with friends and family at the beach?! Practice the special art of mindfulness and do all of that without distraction.

Your ultimate holiday is waiting to be discovered!

The End of an Era … farewell Anneline

We bid farewell to our dear Anneline who has worked with us since 2011. While we may no longer be able to call her a colleague, she leaves friends, memories, and lessons learned for each of us. We’ve loved her journey, with all the highs and lows and the many laughs. Her integrity has stood the test of time. It’s been a pleasure getting to know Anneline, seeing her grow and working with her at CVC.

Anneline has made hundreds of bookings for families from all over the world, creating thousands of memories across the Western Cape. She’s been by our side through new beginnings, mergers, ebola, visa restrictions, water crisis, loadshedding and covid; perfect summers, record months and so many delighted returning guests. The team faces have changed over the years, and now it’s Anneline’s turn to spread her wings. We wish her all the luck in the world in her future endeavours.

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to our weekly team coffee mornings; almost 10 years after the middle image above. Our first in 11 years without Anneline (although her name was mentioned often) at The Blue Water Café in Imhoff Farm, Kommetjie; well worth a visit for lunch with picture perfect views across the valley to the Atlantic Ocean, local shopping and an animal filled farmyard waiting to be fed by the visiting children.

February and March – The Best of Cape Town

January is now behind us as one of Cape Town’s busiest months. It’s been hot and sunny, and there have been loads of summer events to attend and activities to enjoy.
February brings long warm sunny days, warm and pleasant evenings and blue skies with temperatures reaching over 30°C. Rain is scarce the sun sets after 8pm and there is always something going on. With the holiday season in the rear view mirror, Cape Town’s beaches are less populated yet the weather is still perfect for a day by the sea.

Many people believe this is the best time to visit Cape Town, so pack your sandals, swimsuits, shorts and dresses and loads of sunscreen and join us. The stunning beaches, water sports, mountains, views, outdoors activities and adventures are here to enjoy.

The wineries in and around Cape Town are at their best and allow visitors to participate in the gathering and juicing of grapes as two of the nation’s top wine regions, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, both host wine festivals in February.

In Late February – The decade old Constantia Fresh Food and Wine Festival has evolved to become one of South Africa’s most prestigious wine events. Top chefs prepare gourmet foods to accompany wines offered by several dozen local and international wineries. Craft beers and live music are also on the menu. It’s hosted at Buitenverwachting Wine Farm, in the heart of Constantia, in South Africa’s oldest wine region.

March is then the beginning of the shoulder season, when the summer holiday crowds have left and there are a number of very big events; including the Two Oceans Marathon, the Cape Town Cycle Tour, and then the Easter Weekend, this time of year can be very busy, and flights and accommodation are booked up long in advance.

.

Time well spent on your holiday …. Hike, Surf and Coffee

Living in Scarborough, I am privileged to have all the things I love to do right on my doorstep; here are some of my favourite: morning mountain runs to the Scarborough beacon for breathtaking views across the Peninsula, coffee and croissants from Sunshine Cafe’ or The Hub, surfing, flying a kite, hiking or relaxing on the beach with my family. I hope that you will make wonderful holiday memories in and around our beautiful city.

We have so many great hiking options, short and cheerful for the family and then the all day challenges. From Cape Point Nature Reserve to The Table Mountain Nature Reserve, there is plenty on offer. We know so many little secret trails that will get you quickly to the top of Chapmans Peak, or above the smaller mountains in Scarborough with nature on our doorstep.

Whether you enjoy a trail run or a family walk, the South Peninsula certainly has all the options and a surf at Scarborough beach or Witsands is the perfect way to cool down.

Voted best city to visit in the world (for the 7th consecutive year!) by Telegraph readers, Cape Town has everything to offer for a fantastic holiday for you and your family. I look forward to welcoming you and sharing some of it’s secrets

Jump, Dive, Splash and Relax

A Summer holiday is near; lying by the pool, the sound of the waves from the garden to your lounge and the sun caressing your skin. A joyful sound of your kids splashing in the water is the perfect background for your daydreams that float across your mind. When it’s time to cool down, you can immerse yourself in the cool blue of the pool and lose yourself in the breathtaking views of the mountains and the Atlantic beyond. As the sun sets, and the salt dries on your skin, your nap prepares you for the tasty treats that await at one of the Capes many fabulous restaurants.

Cape Town’s Tidal Pools

Then, when it’s time to gather the family for an outing, visit one of Cape Town’s tidal pools just a few minutes’ drive away; spectacular swimming spots invite you to sit on the rocks and sip on a cool drink, while the kids play safely in the gentle ocean tides. When they tire of the waves, share in their delight as they explore the rocks around the tidal pools, and discover sea creatures – starfish, crabs and silvery shoals of tiny fish that make their home in the crystal pools.

Salt water has been shown to have many spa-like benefits, so for that skin-tingling boost and radiant glow, take a dip in the tidal pool, like the locals do come rain or shine, and feel the difference.

Great Restaurants Nearby

Swimming always stirs up the appetite – just a hop, skip and a jump from the tidal pools to the summer lunches on offer. From Maiden’s Cove in Camps Bay, with its cinematic views of the Twelve Apostles and breaching whales near the shoreline, hang out with the fashionistas and celebrities that frequent the strip as you tuck in to a seafood platter. Emerge from Dalebrook Pool in Kalk Bay and spot the local artists and musicians at Dalebrook Café just across the road. This café serves delicious breakfasts and lunches, as well as great coffee and fresh juices.

Summer is for Swimming

This summer, let us find a holiday home with the perfect pool for you. Soak up the sun, drift suspended between the azure blue of the sky above you and the silvery blue of the water that holds you and leave the heavy lifting to us, the CVC Team.

Our World Awaits You

We invite you to share some our favourite places with us; Noordhoek, Kommetjie and surrounding areas offer everything you could wish for in a holiday destination. Our collection of family friendly holiday homes and beach villas with “barefoot luxury” at their core offer sea views, sunsets, swimming pools and style.

Take a moment to relax and enjoy our video, featuring the places we love and the things we love to do; it will be worth it!

Why Vitamin ‘Sea’ is Good for You

Cape Town beach rentalsThere’s something soothing and nostalgic about holidays at the beach, where the sights and the sounds have remained the same for centuries. The deep blue of the ocean holds your gaze. The call of the sea gulls punctuates the ebb and flow of the waves and children’s squeals of delight add a layer of joy to this sound collage. The sun caresses your skin and the foamy waves tickle your toes as you savour the salty tang of the air. The scent of sun cream and the slightly grainy feel as you rub it onto your skin reminds you of happy childhood holidays.

All these things – the liberating feel of sand between your toes, the tangy scent of the sea air and the rhythm of the waves on the shore – conspire to fill you with peace and calm.

Best of all is that research proves that regular getaways to the beach are good for you.

6 reasons Vitamin Sea is good for you:

  1. The sight and sound of the waves rhythmically breaking on the shore affects your brain waves and induces a mildly meditative state.
  2. The scent of the sea breeze is filled with negative ions, which can boost your mood.
  3. The azure blue of the ocean is a colour that enhances creativity and calm.
  4. Natural beauty therapy: sand is a natural exfoliator, sea water gives your skin that healthy, just-walked-out-of-the-spa look, and sunlight is full of Vitamin D.
  5. Fruits of the ocean (like fresh fish, shellfish, and seaweed) are packed with nutritional goodness.
  6. Building sand castles with the kids, rubbing sun cream on your partner – all these bring us into the moment and invite us to nurture connections to ourselves and our loved ones.

5 Reasons Running on Our Beach is a Great Workout

Do you like to be active on holiday, and stay on track with your fitness regimen? Or are holidays all about switching off and working on your tan while listening to the sound of the waves?

Whatever your holiday-making style, when you book a stay with CVC, you’ll find a wide selection of beaches in walking distance or within a short drive.

For those of you who like to be on the sand in your training gear, find all the benefits here.

Smiling woman running on beach5 reasons running on the beach is good for you:

  1. Sensory stimulation – breathe in the salty tang, feast your eyes on the azure ocean and hazy mountains, feel the rhythm of the waves accompany your steps.
  2. Sand running builds strength – running on the beach is not as easy as it looks!
  3. Running on the uneven surface engages your core.
  4. It burns more calories so training is more effective.
  5. The softer surface has less impact on ankles, knees and hips.

Here are some other fun ideas to spend time in Kommetjie with the family – once you’re freshly showered (and feeling smug!) of course.

Designer Family Holidays in ‘The South Peninsula’

“The role of the designer is that of a good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.” Charles Eames

There is a sublime pleasure in spending your holiday at a home where every space has a delight and every room is thoughtfully designed. A natural flow from indoor to outdoor spaces, means the witty repartee can fly between the cooks and the socialites around the kitchen island; making it easy to grab a cold drop of something from the fridge, with the laughter of the kids in the pool plays a happy backdrop.

CVC and the team, really prides itself on the fact that each of our handpicked holiday homes has beautiful design features and carefully curated spaces.

One of these gorgeous homes is Tone Alexander’s Noordhoek villa, Le Vue d’Alexandre. His keen eye for detail and beauty means that you can relax and luxuriate in stylish surroundings. There’s always a side table placed just where you need it, the sumptuous couches on the veranda are perfectly positioned to catch the afternoon breeze, and the views of the mountain are beautifully framed by the landscaped garden.

Tone’s garden’s win awards, and the formal garden category in the Noordhoek Open Gardens comes as no surprise, with its perfectly pruned hedges and Iceberg roses, without forgetting the quirky gin bar (nicknamed ‘The happiest little gin palace’), which lures you out across the manicured lawns for a sundowner.

Tone was also asked by a London-based client to tackle the interior and exterior transformation of The Milkwood, a heritage Victorian cottage in Gordon’s Bay. Once again, he’s created a holiday home that invites you to relax and unwind.

We look forward to hosting you in one of our designer homes soon. Click on our Peak Season Offers to find the perfect holiday home for you.

Barefoot Luxury at its Best

Franschhoek luxury villaFarm Lorraine estate is the epitome of Barefoot Luxury, (which happens to be one of CVC’s business principles). The moment you pull up to the hedge-lined drive and curve up the slope to the mountain backdrop and the bountiful orchards, you are swept up in the luxurious embrace of our Franschhoek homestead.

When the CVC team recently spent a weekend at Farm Lorraine, we made sure to practise what we preach. The minute we’d dropped our bags, we slipped off our shoes to enjoy the feel of the lush manicured lawns beneath our feet, pick some fresh lemons off the laden lemon tree and prepare for sundowners on the deck.

Ideal for Family Celebrations

Our exclusive use estate lends itself to family festivities. When we arrived, our work ‘family’ spread ourselves into each of the three gorgeous villas on the estate and while the grownups got settled, the kids congregated around the pool and the dam. Some jumped into the peddle boat to visit the sweet private beach on the opposite side of the dam, while others launched into an active game of Marco Polo in the pool.

The Manor House is the perfect spot for everyone to come together and the open-plan kitchen was soon filled with laughter and chatter. The kids adjourned to the games room to play pool on the professional-size billiard table, while some grownups got the braai going on the deck. We all savoured the play of light on the water of the dam as the sun set and the flames of the fire warmed our cheeks.

At the end of the evening, we retired to our various sumptuous accommodations. Mornings at Farm Lorraine estate are spectacular, as the sun’s rays stroke the shoulders of the mountains, birdsong fills the air and the steam from your coffee rises.

Franschhoek things to doFranschhoek Splendour

The world-renowned town of Franschhoek is only a 5-minute drive away from our estate, where there is a bountiful selection of award-winning restaurants and wine farms to visit. Spend a pleasant morning exploring the high-end boutiques and art galleries in the main road, then have a coffee at one of the many sidewalk cafés and watch the passing parade or take some time to hop onto the Franschhoek Wine Tram.

Kommetjie Time

Kommetjie beach holidayWithin a few moments of putting your bags down and arriving for your holiday in one of our Kommetjie villas, you’ll find yourself slowing down to the laidback rhythm of Kommetjie time. Feel your breathing deepen and your body unknot as you take in the expansive views of Long Beach and Chapman’s Peak. Let the song of the waves soothe you as you savour the thought of days ahead filled only with sun and sea.

When you’re ready to emerge from the self-contained comfort of your holiday home, wander over to the village hub for breakfast at one of the cafés, then browse the local deli to stock up on artisan breads and Cape wine for a languorous lunch at the poolside of your villa.

Take an easy stroll along the wooden boardwalk towards the lighthouse, with occasional stops for the kids to explore the many rock pools along the way.

Kommetjie beach holidayThe lighthouse in Kommetjie, called Slangkop (Afrikaans for ‘snake head’) has been burning on the shores of the Atlantic since 1917, warning ships about the rocky coastline. Book a guided tour of this beacon, one of South Africa’s oldest lighthouses. The lighthouse keeper will take you up the internal spiral staircase all the way to the top with its panoramic views.

Head back along the boardwalk and appreciate the view of Table Mountain from a different angle. Sink back into the welcoming comfort of your holiday home and savour the luxury of long days ahead… of Kommetjie time.

Why Glencairn will steal your heart

Only 4 kms north of Simon’s Town, the little village of Glencairn, with its mountainside homes, boasts sweeping views of False Bay. Glencairn is central to all the scenic stops on the Cape Point Route, only 2 kms away from Harbour Bay shopping centre and 10 minutes drive from the penguin colony at Boulders.

But once you’re ensconced in your holiday villa, you won’t want to leave this gem of a spot, which has everything you need for the perfect holiday.

There’s Glencairn beach, a beautiful long beach with a newly refurbished tidal pool for the kids to swim and snorkel safely and explore the nearby rock pools.

Glencairn is also a great spot for whale watching in season (July to November). The wreck of the Glencairn barge lies just off the coast and serves as a popular diving haunt, with the fascinating reef that surrounds the wreck.

Across the road from the beach, there’s the Glencairn Wetland (great for bird-watching and long walks), part of the Wetland Conservation area and home to diverse plant species, birds, Cape clawless otter, mongoose and buck. Overlooking the wetland, there’s Hotel Glencairn (built in 1904), which serves the best burgers in the area. Downstairs, there’s a fab vegan café, a quirky bar, as well as a waste-free grocer stocked with organic produce and artisanal fresh breads. Up the road there’s Dixie’s Restaurant, a family-run restaurant that’s been serving hearty meals to locals and tourists alike for 40 years.

You can also take the family to visit the Scratch Patch and Mineral World Gemstone shop, where the kids can forage for shiny treasures or play cave golf while the grown-ups marvel at the collector’s gemstones and fossils available in the shop.

A holiday in Glencairn will leave you feeling rested and replenished, your mind filled with the glorious views of the bay and your skin kissed by the sun.

With its museums, art galleries, planetarium, green parks, heritage buildings and café culture, this city cradled in the arms of Table Mountain, is worth setting aside a couple of days to explore.

Restaurants

Cape Town’s reputation as a gourmet foodie destination is growing, with award-winning restaurants in the winelands and in the humming, cosmopolitan streets below the big mountain waiting to tempt your palate.

Penguins

Head down to Boulders beach and watch these unique creatures waddle about comically on land. But don’t giggle too loudly, because their grace in the water will astound you, as they speed past you like black and white darts.

The V&A Waterfront

Where the city meets the sea, this magnificent harbour development with its awe-inspiring Table Mountain backdrop, will bowl you over. There is something for everyone here, from fine dining to glamorous shopping, the Two Oceans Aquarium, a plethora of activities for kids and a selection of sunset cruises. After a day here, you’ll struggle to gather everyone together to herd them back to your holiday villa.

Beaches

Cape Town is bordered by the Indian and Atlantic Oceans so there is a wide selection of pristine beaches to choose from. Whether you want to take a long walk on the beach, build sandcastles with the kids, catch the next swell on your surfboard, people-watch, or just sit on a bench with an ice cream and watch the waves, there is a beach here with your name on it.

Kirstenbosch Gardens

You will be swept away by the breathtaking grandeur of the Kirstenbosch Gardens, one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Take a stroll, go on a hike or just lounge on the lawns and absorb the peaceful beauty.

Cape Villa Collection

And best of all, after a long day exploring, you can come home to one of our gorgeous villas. Here you can kick off your shoes, pour a long, cool drink of something and savour the view while you wait for the braai to heat up.

The Bay House: Inside Scoop

There is only one … The Bay House. And behind this gorgeous home are two lovely people: Stuart and Jacky Simmonds.

The story of how they found The Bay House is filled with synchronicity. Last year, Stuart and Jacky were house hunting in Kommetjie and drove past a For Sale house which piqued their interest, so they went in to have a look. They were swept away by the spectacular views this home offered. With a growing feeling of déja vu, the couple realised that they’d enjoyed a very festive New Year’s Eve in this very house in the 80’s. The fact that it was now 31st December, decades later, added to the feeling that this house was meant to be theirs.

Then followed a year of renovations and refurbishments, and they’re thrilled with what has been achieved. In typical self-deprecating fashion, Stuart says the only décor decision he was allowed to weigh in on was the selection of the large TV screen for the sumptuously cosy TV lounge.

Stuart is an English cricketer whose entertaining autobiography Watching With My Heroes, was published to great acclaim in 2017. On the bookshelf of The Bay House you’ll find Stuart’s series of children’s books, Hannah the Spanner. These are based on stories he told his two daughters, Hannah and Lucy, when they were small. He’d always promised to turn these tales into books one day, and this year, with the release of seven titles in the series, he’s been true to his word. Best of all, he presented his daughter Hannah, the series’ namesake, with the published books on her 21st birthday. She burst into tears when she opened the present.

Treat yourself to a luxurious getaway in this gorgeous holiday home, and – if you can tear your eyes away from the glorious views – set aside some time to read Stuart’s books. (click here)

Holidays By Design

“The role of the designer is that of a good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.” Charles Eames

There is nothing like the sublime pleasure of spending your holiday in a home where every space delights the eye and is thoughtfully designed. When there is natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, it means the witty repartee can fly between those cooking and those having an apéritif around the kitchen island, it’s easy to grab another cold drop of something from the fridge, and the laughter of the kids in the pool provides a happy backdrop.

We pride ourselves on the fact that each of our handpicked holiday homes has beautiful design features and carefully curated spaces.

The fact that Tone’s garden recently won the formal garden category in the Noordhoek Open Gardens comes as no surprise, with its perfectly pruned hedges and Iceberg roses, without forgetting the quirky gin bar (nicknamed ‘The happiest little gin palace’), which lures you out across the manicured lawns for a sundowner.

Change Your Point of View at Cape Point Nature Reserve

At the most south-westerly tip of Africa, it feels like you are miles away, yet it’s only a 20-minute drive from many of our holiday villas. Some of these homes are still available for December – check out our Peak Season Offers.

Cape Point boasts many hiking and cycling trails well worth exploring. You might spot zebra, eland, baboons, ostriches, or bontebok. You could even get lucky and see a Verraux’s eagle soaring in the blue sky above, or ostriches on the beach at Olifantsbos. Let this magical place fill you with wonder as you breathe in the fynbos air.

Absorb the silence and majestic splendour of this place, then get your 10 000 daily steps covered by climbing all the way to the top of Cape Point to the lighthouse. Or take the kids up on The Flying Dutchman, a funicular railway that will save your breath. Your reward will be spectacular 360 degree views.

You can end your day with a delicious seafood platter and breathtaking ocean views at the restaurant, or bring your own picnic to the Bordjiesdrif or Buffels Bay tidal pools. Keep an eye out for baboons wanting to join in the fun!

Cape Town’s Turquoise Beaches: Noordhoek

The drive over Chapman’s Peak sees the most beautiful mountain pass road curve to reveal the gorgeous stretch of soft white sand and turquoise waters of Noordhoek Beach.

When you stay in Noordhoek, you can choose to go horse riding, explore the rock pools, splash in the turquoise water, head out for a surf or simply just sit and soak it all up.

Our Noordhoek villas showcase the glorious backdrop of the Chapman’s Peak mountain range, swathed in the milkwood forest that covers the dunes up to the massive seaside boulders.

You’ll find us here at our favourite sundowner spot called ‘The Hoek’.

Grab a cold bottle of something and ‘pull in’ (as the locals say)!

Scarborough: Experience the Magic!

When you book a getaway in one of our villas in Scarborough, you’ve discovered the secret recipe to making your holiday moments last forever.

Time stands still

Time stands still in this beautiful conservation village on the Cape Peninsula – where morning traffic is made up of surfers heading down to catch the waves, the only light at night is from the moon and stars, and where you’ll probably get a puzzled silence from your phone if you try to order Uber Eats.

Immerse yourself in the magic

Holidays spent in Scarborough are all about immersion in the local lifestyle. Stroll up the road to Whole Earth Café for a delicious flapjack stack. If you don’t feel like sitting for a coffee, there’s a convenient take-away café at The Village Hub, where you can watch cyclists whizz by in training for the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

The Village Hub

While you’re there, have a look at the handcrafted wooden bikes made by local surfer and bike creator, David Stubbs. Stock up on artisanal sourdough bread and fresh organic salads for lunch later. Eavesdrop on the locals swopping tips on where to find the best waves, then head down to the breathtakingly gorgeous beach. It’s never crowded and there’s always parking. Soak up the spectacular views towards Misty Cliffs, while the kids delight in the sea life of the rock pools.

Mo’s Bric-a-Brac shop

Wander across the road from the beach to Mo’s Bric-a-Brac shop. You’ll find the rickety wooden garden gate ajar. At the door, there’s a big brass bell suspended from the ceiling.

Pull the string and as the chime resounds in the depths of the house, a petite older lady emerges. Her shop is just what it says it is, full of odds and ends: old silver-plated tea sets, creepy looking dolls and hand knitted children’s jerseys, and  jars of golden honey from a farm in Piketberg.

As you say your goodbyes, Mo leans against the top of her stable door and smiles. The sun creates a halo effect against her wizened cheeks and for a moment, she looks like a kindly angel.

Lots of fun things to do

Choose between immersing yourself in a wildly delicious beach foraging experience with locals Veld and Sea, feasting on delicious seafood platters or listening to jazz and tucking in to a Sunday fish braai at the Camel Rock, or learning how residents are keeping Scarborough pristine and wildlife-friendly.

This magical location is fantastic for relaxing and recharging. You’ll want to bottle the scent of the salty air as the sun warms the sand beneath your feet.

‘Scarborough’

An excerpt from a poem by Hal Shaper

At Scarborough they do not keep the time

by clock or watch or any measurement we know

At Scarborough they do not keep the time at all

they let it go

And there they measure out the drift of days

in moments that become the aftertaste of memories…

of children and the sound of dogs

And tidal pools

and every year the sight of whales

And sky and wind and waves that whisper tales…’

(Hal Shaper was a SA songwriter and Scarborough resident who spent much of his musical career in London writing for artists like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand and David Bowie.)

Here’s the Inside Scoop on fun family activities in beautiful Cape Town

When you book your family holiday with us, you’re lucky enough to be dealing with locals who love the area and spend weekends exploring and soaking up our surroundings.

Some of the CVC team’s favourite things to do with our families (but shhh, keep these to yourself!):

Take a sunset stroll along Fish Hoek beach, see if you can spot dolphins or whales, and then watch the full moon rise over the Hottentots Hollands mountains.

Pat the horses on Noordhoek Common, then meander past the tree swings under the leafy oaks, watch the squirrels gambolling about and see if the kids can find the Fairy Tree.

Pack a picnic, some buckets and fishing nets, and take the kids to Glencairn Beach to explore the rock pools and do some starfish spotting.

Take a hike in the Cape Point Nature Reserve and absorb the spectacular views over the Atlantic.

Walk along Kommetjie beach in the morning and watch the local dogs sitting on the sand waiting for their surfer owners to return from the waves.

Take the kids to Boulders Beach and experience the thrill of swimming with the penguins, followed by an ice cream in the sun.

Pack some chilled white wine, fresh goat’s cheese and bread from Cape Point Bakery and head down the secret path to Smitswinkel Bay, a tiny hideaway with pedestrian access only.

On your next holiday with us, why not add your own special discovery to our list?

Welcome to our World!

Splish, Splash and Relax!

Summer holidays are all about lying by the pool, letting the sound of the waves just beyond your villa lull you as the sun caresses your skin. The joyful sound of the kids splashing in the water creates the perfect background for the daydreams that float across your mind. And when it’s time to cool down, you can immerse yourself in the cool blue of the pool and soak up the spectacular views of the mountains and the Atlantic beyond. All you have to decide is which fine dining restaurant you should visit for dinner, or whether you should nap now or later.

Cape Town’s Tidal Pools

Then, when it’s time to gather the family for an outing, visit one of Cape Town’s tidal pools just a few minutes’ drive from your villa. These spectacular swimming spots invite you to sit on the rocks and sip on a cool drink, while the kids play safely in the gentle waves. When they tire of the water, share in their delight as they explore the rocks around the tidal pools, and discover the little sea creatures like starfish, crabs and silvery shoals of tiny fish that make their home in the rock pools.

Salt water has been shown to have many spa-like benefits, so for that skin-tingling boost and radiant glow, take a dip in the tidal pool, like the locals do come rain or shine, and feel the difference.

Great Restaurants Nearby

Swimming stirs up the appetite, so head across the road from these tidal pools to the fantastic restaurants on offer. From Maiden’s Cove in Camps Bay, with its breathtaking views of the Twelve Apostles and breaching whales that come close to the shoreline, you can take a short walk to the restaurant strip. Hang out with the fashionistas and celebrities that frequent Camps Bay as you tuck in to a seafood platter. If you’ve emerged from Dalebrook Pool in Kalk Bay, you can people-watch and spot the local artists and musicians at Dalebrook Café just across the road. This café serves delicious breakfasts and lunches, as well as great coffee and fresh juices.

Summer is for Swimming

This summer, let us find a villa with the perfect pool for you. Soak up the sun as you drift suspended between the azure blue of the sky that stretches above you and the silvery blue of the water that holds you.

Add a touch of mindfulness to your holiday

You spend months looking forward to your holiday, but when you’ve put your bags down and opened the veranda doors of your villa to let in the salty sea air, it can take a while to clear your mind and relax.
In the wise words of Pooh, A.A. Milne’s endearing Bear of Little Brain:

“What day is it?” asked Pooh.
“It’s today,” squeaked Piglet.
“My favourite day,” said Pooh.

As Pooh shows us, one of the best ways of emptying your mind is by focusing on the present moment. Studies show that practicing present moment awareness can help you relax, pay attention and feel happier.

Jon Kabat-Zinn (the ‘father’ of secular mindfulness) says, “Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.”

5 Top Tips for creating a mindful holiday:

1. Come to your senses. Take the time to taste that first sip of tea, to feel the crisp bedsheets, to breathe in the sea air and watch the sea gulls soaring in the sky, and listen to the waves breaking on the shore.
2. Use your breath to slow down and focus. Long, deep breaths in and out will help reduce stress and draw you back into your body.
3. Create unstructured time. Let go of your long list of holiday activities and any residual FOMO. Enjoy where you are right now.
4. Be creative. Write in your journal, work on that painting, try out a new craft.
5. Disconnect to reconnect. Put your phone on silent. Hold your partner’s hand while you watch the kids build sandcastles. Haul out those board games that remind you of your childhood.

Breathing in deeply and soaking in your surroundings will fill you with a deep sense of wellbeing.

And that is what holidays are all about.

‘Let’s Go Fly a Kite’

You know you’ve reached the village of Kommetjie when you catch sight of colourful kites arching above you. Octopuses and fish of all sizes flutter in the sea breeze and a smile breaks across your face. You take a deep breath of the salty air. You’re on holiday.

Sip your morning coffee on the veranda of your beach villa and watch the surfers with their long boards heading out to catch the swells. The only thought in your head, as the cormorants dry their wings on the rocks and the oyster catchers forage for mussels is whether you’re going to get freshly made noodles from Komin Noodle or pizza from Kommetjie Pizzeria delivered for lunch.

Far Out Kites

Take a walk up to the village centre in the late afternoon sun and swing past Far Out Kites, to have a chat with Phil Hattingh, our local kite runner, who has been making kites for the past 35 years. Phil looks around at the green, blues and reds of the kites flying outside like colourful bunting and his rugged face breaks into a smile:

‘I love Kommetjie. I’ve been living here since my son started school. Now he’s doing his second degree in Melbourne. Kommetjie is a lovely place to be, really quiet. Actually, I really shouldn’t be here; it’s not good for business.’

Phil has recently returned from China, the birthplace of the kite, where he was invited as a guest for the 2019 International Kite Festival in Weifang. Phil was amazed at how so much revolved around the kite: streetlamps designed in the shape of kites and public spaces filled with sculptures of kite makers and their kites. Much to Phil’s surprise, the kite arch he brought with him turned out to be the longest in the world.

Select your own kite from the wide array then make a detour to see the Skilpadsvlei Bird Hide tucked away in the lush greenery along the little path between age-old Milkwood trees.

French picnic in the Cape

Before you head to the beach to fly your kite (because all kite runners need fortification in the form of good food!) head up the road to Just Foods Deli. Stock up on freshly baked bread (made with love and stone-ground flour just around the mountain in Scarborough), goats’ cheese (made with happy goats nearby in Imhoff’s Farm) and a good bottle of Cape wine from Kommetjie Liquors.

Stroll down to the beach and voilá, your kite-flying picnic á la française in the Cape is complete!

Cape Town’s Water Restrictions have been relaxed

Level 3 “recovery” restrictions are in place, effective 1 December 2018. Cape Town is situated in a water-scarce region and weather patterns remain uncertain so residents and visitors are strongly encouraged to continue working together to help change the way in which we use our water.

Excerpts from Mayor Plato’s announcement on 29 November 2018:

‘I want to thank all the residents, officials, and visitors to Cape Town who played their part in helping us get through one of the worst droughts this city has ever seen. While the drought is not yet over, we have seen that there is room to bring some relief to our residents over the festive season. We will still need to be water-wise though, as we do not know what the next rainy season holds.

We are no longer in a period of extreme scarcity, but it does not mean that we should forego some of the great water-wise ways that we have made a part of our daily lives – and for which we have become world famous. We are situated in a water-scarce region and the water-wise efforts and ways to diversify and augment our water supply should and will continue.’

What do Level 3 Water Restrictions mean?

  • A daily water usage limit of 105 litres per person per day.
  • Municipal drinking-quality water may be used according to the City’s Guidelines.
  • Pools can be filled and Gardens can be watered (subject to strict restrictions detailed by the City).

Level 3 Water Restrictions Guidelines: (click here)

Please keep supporting water wise initiatives:

  • Keep evaporation covers on pools when not in use.
  • Take a short shower.
  • Only flush when really necessary.
  • Don’t leave the tap running while brushing your teeth.
  • Wait for a full load before running the dishwasher or washing machine
  • Don’t wash dishes under a running tap, run a sink.
  • Keep evaporation covers on pools when not in use.

Have a wonderful holiday in Cape Town.

Thank you for your support. Every drop counts!

Cape Town’s Water Restrictions have been Relaxed

Cape Town is still recovering from a drought. The dam levels are looking healthy and we hope that our continued water saving efforts will see a full recovery of the city’s water supply.

Level 5 Water Restrictions (From Level 6), effective from 1 October 2018 are in place until further notice.

By supporting essential water saving practices tourists and local visitors can enjoy our beautiful city and all that it has to offer, while helping save our precious resource.

What do Level 5 Water Restrictions mean?

  • Municipal drinking-quality water may not be used for outside and non-essential purposes.
  • A daily water usage limit of 70 litres per person per day.

Level 5 Water Restrictions explained by the City: (click here)

How does this affect Home Owners?

  • Property owners can be fined if water usage limits as specified by the City (which is subject to change) are exceeded.
  • Watering of gardens is only allowed using non-potable water and watering times have been restricted in order to preserve the groundwater resource.
  • Municipal drinking water may not be used to top up or refill swimming pools.

How does this affect you?

  • Cape Town’s water quality is monitored continuously and all water supplied to our taps is safe to drink.
  • Expect gardens to be dryer than usual.
  • Swimming pools will be clean and usable to the best of the owner’s ability; many have evaporation covers and their own water source.
  • Jacuzzi’s may not be operational.
  • Bath plugs may be removed from the property.
  • Water meter readings may be monitored at check-in and check-out to determine usage during your stay.
  • Should the City impose a fine on the owner for excessive use, you may be liable.
  • Some properties have water monitoring devices in place to limit daily water usage.

It is important that we all work together to keep Cape Town’s taps running:

  • Take a short 2 minute shower.
  • Use a bucket to collect the water (cleaning the floor or watering the garden).
  • Only flush when really necessary (and preferably with grey water).
  • Don’t leave the tap running while brushing your teeth.
  • Use hand sanitizer instead of water.
  • Wait for a full load before running the dishwasher or washing machine
  • Run a shallow sink; don’t wash dishes under a running tap.
  • Consider hand washing clothing and less frequent washing.
  • Keep evaporation covers on pools when not in use.

We’re still enjoying ourselves in Cape Town:

Thankfully we have some of the greatest beaches in the world, so please make the most of them this year!
Enjoy singing in the shower to the tunes of some of SA’s biggest artists: Click here for great 2 minute shower songs.

5 Good Reasons to Book your Holiday Early in 2018

The best properties in the Cape book up very early in the year. Even with the water restrictions we’re seeing those in the know, our return guests, booking up December 2018 fast. We have some fantastic Cape Town options available with their own water sources and in areas less affected.

If you haven’t begun your own travel plans, it’s time to get started. Not convinced that the early bird catches the worm? Here are some very good reasons that getting in there a few months early will go a long way in scoring that fabulous villa overlooking the beach…

Planning the details around your trip are essential when finding your perfect holiday villa in Cape Town. If you’re feeling tired just thinking about all of that, I don’t blame you – it should be fun though – so have a look at these reasons to plan ahead this year…

  1. All the best villas get taken early: Some visitors book their accommodation a full year in advance. Others begin to book now in the few months that lead up to the busy time of year. From December to February, the majority of establishments are booked up, leaving the most expensive along with the least lovely of options for the ‘late comers’.
  2. You may have to stay in a different area. Camps Bay to Kommetjie are the most popular areas for accommodation, followed closely by Kalk Bay and the False Bay coastline. While it’s not such a bad thing to try another area (all of Cape Town has much to offer after all), booking earlier gives you dibs on the hottest suburbs of them all for your holiday.
  3. Your stress levels will go into overdrive. You know what it’s like when last-minute plans arise and you need to find a suitable Plan B at short notice. This happens at work, home, in social lives and in many other instances too. Having this happen with your much-anticipated holiday however is not very good from a stress point of view though – unless you really can’t avoid leaving things late of course.
  4. You can get on with the fun things. Once the final plans have been sorted, all you really need to do is the packing, saving and daydreaming. Have a look to see what sort of tours, adventures, activities and sights can be seen in Cape Town and surrounds, and you will begin to get even more excited for your trip ahead.
  5. You can start your New Year’s resolutions early. Remember last year when you made that resolution about making this an organised year? This year, don’t wait for resolution time – get organised right now, and you will be way ahead of your fellow resolution-makers for a change.

Sometimes in life, things happen that we don’t expect. Even the best laid plans go awry, as the saying goes. If worse comes to worst, we are here to help you find your ideal Cape Town holiday villa whenever you book!

This is our world – Cape Town in the Summer is magical

We have created a video showcasing the incredible Noordhoek, Kommetjie and the surrounding areas; showing off some of our favourite places and things that we love to do.

Take a moment to relax and enjoy our video; it’s worth it!

Water restrictions apply in Cape Town

Cape Town is experiencing a severe drought but the City is still ‘open for business’; The Western Cape is one of the most beautiful places on earth and Cape Town a must-visit city for tourists. By supporting important water saving practices tourists and local visitors can enjoy this incredible city and all it has to offer, without placing unnecessary strain on the water supply.

Dam levels have reached a critical low with little chance of rain during our long dry summer season. If Cape Town does not reduce their water usage urgently, we face the prospect of taps running dry and water collection points being the norm. The City has Issued Level 6 Water Restrictions & Water Rationing to manage this water crisis and although it is difficult to predict, it is likely these will remain the status quo.

What does a Level 6 Water Restriction mean?

It’s a ban on all use of municipal drinking-quality water for outside and non-essential purposes (The use of borehole water for outdoor purposes is also discouraged in order to preserve groundwater resources) and a warning that some areas may experience short water outages or intermittent supply from time to time without notice. Property owners will be heavily fined if they exceed strict water usage limits as specified by the city.

What you can do to help…

  • Please enjoy your holiday and our incredible city, visitors are essential to the economy and it wouldn’t be the same without you!
  • You can rest assured that Cape Town’s water quality is monitored continuously and all water supplied to our taps is safe to drink.
  • We need you to use water sparingly and support any water saving measures your chosen holiday home has in place.
  • Please do not use any non-essential outside water (e.g. no washing cars).  Do not be tempted to fill pools if they’re looking low, and keep the evaporation covers on when not in use. Thankfully we have some of the greatest beaches in the world, so please make the most of them this year!
  • Please understand that we are working to ensure your stay is comfortable but there are a few things that may affect your stay, gardens will be dryer than usual, some pools/ Jacuzzis may not be usable and water monitoring devices may be in place to limit daily water usage.
  • It is essential that we all work together and support the ‘Save like a Local’ initiative:

Take short 2 minute showers

Wait for a full load before running

Only flush when necessary

Only wash clothes when necessary

Avoid keeping taps running and close tightly after use

5 Good Reasons to Book Your Cape Town Holiday Accommodation Early

As the southern hemisphere begins its shift from spring to summer, travellers from all over the world are starting to snap up Cape Town holiday accommodation in preparation for a memorable holiday.

If you haven’t begun your own travel plans, you are still not too late however – now is just the right time to decide where you want to stay for that much-needed holiday!

Still not convinced that the early bird catches the worm? Here are some very good reasons that getting in there a few months early will go a long way in scoring that fabulous villa overlooking Camps Bay beach…

Why Planning is Essential When Finding Your Perfect Holiday Villa in Cape Town

There’s no doubt that planning any sort of trip is far less fun than it should be. From getting all the admin sorted – visas, passport renewals, flight tickets – to getting the boss to grant you that leave you’ve waited to claim all year, finding the right place to stay is just another task in a huge list full of tasks.

The search itself is exciting of course – going through pages of amazing looking Cape Town villas and daydreaming about sipping a cold drink on a balcony is a taste of things to come. All too often though, the place you really (really) want is already booked. Or, there is nothing in your budget during the week you plan to be in the city. Or, everything just seems too expensive, too far away, too fancy, too small – even too much, after a few hours of searching.

Feeling tired just thinking about all of that? I don’t blame you – it’s not a fun thought at all. Hold on to that thought though, while you have a look at these reasons to think about planning ahead this year…

  1. All the best villas get taken early. Some visitors book their accommodation a full year in advance. Others begin to book now in the few months that lead up to the busy time of year. From December to February, the majority of establishments are booked up, leaving the most expensive along with the least lovely of options for the ‘late comers’.
  2. You may have to stay in a different area. Camps Bay is the most popular area for accommodation, followed closely by Clifton and the Waterfront.

If worse comes to worst, we are here to help you find your ideal Cape Town holiday villa even if you are only able to book later!

How to Find Luxury Villas For Your Honeymoon

Luxury villas in Cape Town are widely considered the most sought-after of all accommodation for honeymoons in this part of the world… and for good reason too.

What better way to begin a brand new life together than waking up to a spectacular Camps Bay sunrise, or those picture-perfect views of the Atlantic Ocean below? If seaside bliss and state-of-the-art facilities seem like your idea of the perfect way to kick off your post-wedding adventure, then keep reading to find out how to choose your perfect luxury villa in Cape Town.

Cape Town Honeymoon Accommodation

From Clifton to Camps Bay; Bantry Bay to Bakoven, the glorious Atlantic Seaboard coastline is filled with the most gorgeous of all properties. These jewels in the Cape Town honeymoon accommodation throne boast the best views in town, but even more than that, they also ensure that every waking (and slumbering) moment is everything you could ever imagine it to be.

To help you find your honeymoon inspiration, here are some ideas on how to choose a romantic villa.

  • Privacy – one of the many benefits of this type of accommodation is that there is a lot more privacy than you would find at a guest house or hotel. Essentially, you are hiring a ‘home from home’ – this ensures that you won’t have to worry about prying eyes or crowded pools.
  • Location – you could look within the most well-known areas, or look just outside of Camps Bay for a quieter location that is still central and scenic. Llandudno, Bakoven, Bantry Bay, Hout Bay and Clifton are all idyllic options.
  • Facilities – in many cases, honeymoon suites are given an even more special touch with the addition of high-end facilities such as spa bathtubs, private steam rooms, small plunge pools and other luxuries that add to your experience. Ask what you can expect when browsing options.

As for activities that you may want to try over the course of your honeymoon, you will certainly be spoiled for choice in this regard. Take a romantic horse ride along the beach in Noordhoek, or a helicopter flip over the city. Try a sunset champagne boat cruise, or a picnic in the famous Cape Winelands. Food, wine, music, laughter, culture and so much more is all on the cards once you’ve found your ideal Cape Town honeymoon accommodation!

Best Luxury Apartments for Business Travel

While the Mother City has certainly gained the world’s attention as a holiday destination, those stylish luxury apartments in Cape Town are in just as much demand from the business travel sector too each year.

The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) alone plays host to a large number of conferences, expos, trade shows and other industry events. On top of this world-class venue, there are also headquarters at national and international level for a great variety of companies. Media houses, creative agencies, tourism, marketing, development sectors and pretty much any other type of sector under the sun are all represented in the city.

Of course, what makes apartments in Cape Town such a popular choice for business accommodation is their ‘lock up and go’ convenience, central locations, up-to-date facilities and smaller, easier to manage sizes. For those travelling to the city for a conference or meeting, these qualities are ideal to ensure a fuss-free stay.

Choosing Cape Town Luxury Apartments for Business Trips

So how does a smart business traveller go about finding just the right Cape Town luxury apartments for an upcoming trip? Here are some things to keep in mind when starting the hunt for just the right place to stay…

  • Head for the CBD – if you are attending business in the City Centre, you have a good range of options when it comes to apartments. The CBD and its mix of residential and urban streets are great for centrality, while cabs are on just about every corner to get you where you need to go quickly.
  • Book as early as possible – as soon as you have your plans in place, find and book somewhere to stay right away. Travel during peak times – especially towards the end of year summer madness – can be trickier in terms of availability, so make sure that you act quickly to snap up that ideally positioned apartment you fancy.

Check facilities before you book – last but not least, it’s also good to check things like internet options, WiFi, security and whether or not catered services are offered before you sign on any dotted lines. This will ensure that you choose Cape Town apartments that suit your needs, armed with all the info you need to make that booking.

Beachfront Villas in Winter – Another Side to Cape Town’s Beauty

Beachfront villas in Cape Town are always in demand, but for most visitors, these establishments seem to be designed for the hot summer months. After all, isn’t summer when beaches are supposed to be at their best?

Actually, when it comes to its world famous beaches and the sheer variety of Cape Town beachfront villas, you might just be surprised by how much the cooler season has to offer in the way of fun, scenery and charm…

Why Consider Cape Town Beachfront Villas in Winter?

For the northern hemisphere, winter is a time of gloom and doom. Snow, rain, sleet, frost and months upon months of bleak days are all par for the course. The southern hemisphere however experiences a different type of winter. These winters fall in the middle of the year, and in the case of Cape Town, many have even compared this season to northern hemisphere summers!

So what does this mean for those who might be considering a winter break in this part of the world? Here are a few reasons that hiring a beachfront villa in Cape Town during winter may offer a whole new side to the city’s charms.

  1. Plenty of warm days – even at the height of winter, you can still enjoy a marvellously warm day here and there. It is not unusual to have hot days after a week of cooler days, and even the coldest days seldom have temps below 20 degrees Celsius or so.
  2. Incredible scenery – if you have ever witnessed a winter sunset over the ocean, you might have some idea of what to expect from nature during this time of year. The countryside plays along very nicely too in other landscapes, with fresh green fields, towering trees and plenty of other Instagram-worthy sights to take in as well.
  3. Lots to do – winter is packed with things to see and do, from wine tasting to outdoor adventures, festivals, live music shows, comedy nights, the legendary Cape Town Winter Restaurant Specials, pub quizzes at Long Street bars and plenty more besides. Rates are discounted too, making it an affordable time to travel.

As the final cherry on top of the proverbial cake, villas are also fully equipped with luxurious touches to keep you warm and toasty, from fireplaces to luscious blankets, spa bathrooms and even heated pools, depending on where you plan to stay. Take a look at our glorious beachfront villas in Cape Town to find your favourite!

5 Reasons to Choose Self Catering Accommodation

If you’re a traveller who prefers doing things at your own pace, then you might just find that self catering accommodation offers a lot more advantage than the more traditional catered options out there when it comes to planning a trip to the Fairest Cape.

Many will remember holidays as kids, staying at holiday houses where everyone chips in to do the cooking. The new generation of self catered establishments has come a long way since those comfy (but not always very stylish) cabins, with plenty to entice even the most discerning of guests.

Why should you consider self catering accommodation in Cape Town though? Keep reading to find out…

Why Consider Self Catering Accommodation in Cape Town?

Compared to catered options such as hotels and guest houses, or even lodges, the self catering accommodation in Cape Town selection leans more towards convenience and flexibility. These are the ‘lock up and go’ type apartments, villas, cottages and other free standing establishments, that function much like a home away from home. That is of course, if your home is ultra-luxurious and fully equipped with the very latest facilities.

Here are some very good reasons you may want to choose this option for your next trip…

  1. Convenience – other than arrival and departure check-in times, there are no curfews or other limitations to worry about. Instead, you can come and go as you please.
  2. Privacy – as the majority of these establishments are fully freestanding and booked for private use, you will have the place all to yourself too. This is great if you’re looking for some peace and quiet by the pool.
  3. Security – nearly all villas are secure and well managed, with armed response and/or alarm systems in place, as well as safe parking if you are hiring a car during your stay.
  4. Variety – whether you need something spacious for a family holiday, or a small compact apartment for you and your partner, there is plenty of variety on offer.
  5. Facilities – these establishments are fitted with all the latest gadgets, features and other amenities to ensure a pleasant stay. The more luxury, the more chance to relax and unwind!

Remember to browse around and carefully consider what your primary needs are when choosing your final place to stay. If you need any further advice on choosing the right self catering accommodation in Cape Town, give us a shout and we’d be happy to help get you started.

January brings a quieter Cape Town to residents.

Now that the festive season is over, life returns to a familiar hum of normality. The tourists return home and the hotspots along our coastline are no longer brimming with visitors. As the school holidays wind down too, our daily routines and familiar scenes once again become the norm.

Atlantic Seaboard

Don’t let the end of the festive season get you down though, as one of the best ways to combat stress during the working year, is to ensure that you get enough rest and enjoy life to the fullest.

Perhaps one way to make sure you remain calm as you tackle the demands of 2013 is to plan little adventures or weekends away with your family and friends. With the beaches cleared of crowds, you can look forward to spending the remaining summer weekends playing volleyball or relaxing with a cocktail whilst soaking up some sunshine. Destinations favoured by tourists over the festive season, like Camps Bay and Clifton will be easier to reach and quieter to visit.

You could also enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Sea Point Promenade, which runs from Mouille Point to Bantry Bay. If you’re keen to work off a few of the festive kilograms, turn your sunset walk into a jog or run. You’ll be treated to beautiful sunset scenes along the way.

Very soon, the out of season rates will apply for accommodation across the province, making it even cheaper to take a little holiday with your family and friends. Keep a look out for out of season rates for Villas and Apartments across the province!

Don’t let the end of the holidays get you down – the Western Cape is a province to be explored – so enjoy it!

We love Lions Head!

Lions Head is a wellknown mountain peak situated in our very own and much loved Cape Town. A popular hiking spot, Lions Head forms part of the dramatic and mountainous backdrop to Cape Town.

Whilst suburbs surround Lions Head, development on the mountain itself is kept off the higher ground. Conservation groups and the Municipality work closely together to keep Lions Head pristine and its precious vegetation protected.

Lions Head, Cape Town

Exercise enthusiasts regularly enjoy hikes and walks up to the summit, which treats them to spectacular views over the city. It takes approximately an hour to get to the top of Lions Head, which makes it a popular excursion choice for Capetonians. Walking up Lions Head is most popular during full moon, as people get to experience a glorious scene of moon and city lights. If you’re walking up Lions Head, the view will inspire you and the chains near the top will help you reach the summit.

Once you’ve reached the top of Lions Head, you won’t just see beautiful vires of the city, but you’ll also be able to see right along the Cape Peninsula and out to Robben Island. The hike is not suitable for young children or the elderly though, as it can get quite steep. There are alternative, gentler routes up Lions Head perfect for family outings.

Photographers also love Lions Head for its beautiful perspective over Cape Town, and the view forms the backdrop to many a loved picture.
Walkers and hikers are advised to take a jersey when setting out towards the summit. Even if it’s a warm day, it can get quite blustery and chilly near the top, especially after sunset.

Whether it’s sundowners, a sunny picnic or a spot of exercise you’re after, a walk up Lions Head is not to be missed!

Escape to Scarborough

The quiet and colourful village of Scarborough lies just beyond Kommetjie in the Western Cape, and is situated along the Atlantic Seaboard. Picturesque and pleasant, Scarborough is the perfect little town and was designated as a conservation village in 1996. Surrounded by a conserved natural landscape and committed to preventing environmental degradation, Scarborough’s amiable residents and atmosphere make it a friendly town.

Holiday and residential property in Scarborough are in high demand, and accommodation can be hard to come by. Lucky holidaymakers will, however, find themselves ensconced in relaxed holiday homes and spacious beach bungalows.

Whilst Scarborough is a tranquil town, it’s not too far away from the necessary amenities. A few restaurants and shops are dotted around the village and a short drive will get you to Kommetjie, Simonstown, Noordhoek and Fish Hoek.

A nature-lover’s dream, Scarborough is home to one of the peninsula’s most beautiful and unspoilt beaches. With lots of room for sunbathing, the beach is also popular with watersports fanatics. Scarborough beach is a great spot for bodyboarding, kayaking, windsurfing and surfing. Kite surfing is also allowed, as the beach is big enough to manouevre around. Fishing is also a favourite pursuit but permits are required as the area is part of a marine protected area.

Swimming can be a little treacherous at Scarborough beach due to rip currents but lifeguards are on duty during the summer months. During the cooler months, Scarborough is a quiet and cosy spot to escape to, whilst the summer months can get quite busy with tourists and visitors. Scarborough beach is a wonderful place to enjoy a lazy family picnic. Avid whale watchers may also spot these beautiful creatures at play during whale watching season.

With breathtaking mountain landscapes, idyllic ocean views and interesting sights, Scarborough is a true retreat from the craziness of our daily lives.

Aerial view of Llandudno

Llandudno beach is an unspoilt, beautiful stretch of the coastline, surrounded by boulders. Whilst surfers favour this beach, the rough and cold seas are not conducive to swimming. Lifeguards are, however, on duty during the busy holiday seasons.

Residents are fiercely protective of this little haven from the world, and rightly so. With the focus on relaxation, Llandudno is a great place for suntanning and beach sports.

A long and lazy family picnic on the beach is also a great way to spend the day. You’ll be able to enjoy some beach volleyball or soccer and look forward to relaxing on an uncrowded beach. Only a small amount of parking spots are available so overcrowding is not a common occurrence.

Due to the small size of Llandudno, the beach is almost always close by, and if you need to shop or eat out, it’s just a short drive to Hout Bay and other suburbs. Llandudno has only one access road which easily preserves the quiet atmosphere, guaranteeing you a peaceful holiday.

Llandudno View

With larger holiday properties on offer, escaping to Llandudno with the kids and extended family is easy. Accommodation in Llandudno is primarily made up of luxurious villas and beach cottages. With sprawling lawns, exquisite décor and stunning views, properties in Llandudno are in high demand, especially over holiday seasons. With one of the safest swimming beaches in Cape Town, Fish Hoek is an attractive option for family beach holidays. The ocean waters at Fish Hoek beach are warmer than those along the Atlantic seaboard. Fish Hoek is also a haven for watersports fanatics, with a wide variety of watersports facilities and clubs in the area. Body surfing, wind surfing, kayaking and hobie cat sailing are popular pursuits, and you’ll easily find one to suit your desires. If watersports aren’t your idea of fun, then a relaxing afternoon spent on the sand, with a book and your sunscreen is a wonderful way to relax. Fish Hoek is also known for its excellent land-based whale watching opportunities.

Fish Hoek

Hiking, birdwatching and walking trails are also dotted around the area. With mountains as the backdrop to this sweet little town, exploring the region on foot is an experience not to be missed. With a vibrant fishing industry, Fish Hoek restaurants primarily specialize in serving up delicious seafood. The Galley is situated right on Fish Hoek beach and prides itself on offering a delectable array of homegrown cuisine.

Because Fish Hoek is small, it’s easy to explore on foot. Shopping malls, scenic locations and places of interest are all within easy reach. Sun Valley Mall, Long Beach Mall and the Fish Hoek Shopping District are packed with exciting retailers, restaurants and takeaway outlets. You can also enjoy an afternoon of relaxed browsing as the main street of Fish Hoek is peppered with interesting craft, curio and antiques shops.

Fish Hoek Valley Museum is open six days a week and exhibits historical artefacts and photographs from the region, some dating back to the time of the San. Illustrated historical talks, school programmes and guided walks are often hosted by the museum.

Whether your interests extend to fun in the sun or more relaxing pursuits, Fish Hoek is a town to be explored and enjoyed.

Spending a day at Boulders Beach is a must for your holiday itinerary. A secluded beach, protected from the wind and large waves by big boulders, this beach is a wonderful play spot for families. A growing colony of African Penguins live and play on the beach so you can look forward to sharing the sand with some of these little fellows. Children will be enthralled by the penguins’ antics but no feeding or physical interaction with the penguins is advised. Boulders Beach is also a great swimming and picnic spot.

With forest areas scattered across Table Mountain National Park, a forest walk is also a great way to explore this natural gem of a region. The most popular forest walks take you through Newlands Forest, Orange Kloof in Hout Bay and the Muizenberg Mountains. Book your winter holiday at a Villa in the Western Cape

Imagine curling up in front of a toasty fire with a good book, a warm blanket and a big mug of hot chocolate. If that’s your idea of a great way to spend your winter holiday, then you should definitely be choosing a Villa in the Western Cape!

Winter is a time for hearty feasts and quiet evenings indoors with the family. There’s no better way to spend your winter vacation than at a beautiful Villa in the Western Cape.

Villa in the Western Cape

There are three distinctive letting seasons in the Western Cape tourism industry. Peak season, which runs from mid-December to mid-January, is usually the busiest time of the year. Multitudes of holiday makers travel to the Western Cape to enjoy summer by the seaside. It can be a crowded and expensive holiday period to spend in the Western Cape. Longer-term bookings are expected by establishments and often it’s impossible to obtain a booking on the spot. A spontaneous summer holiday can be rather costly!

High season runs from mid-January to the end of April and again from the beginning of October to mid-December. Whilst it is usually quieter and cheaper to take a holiday during this time, longer-term bookings are still expected and it can still be quite costly to enjoy a vacation over this period.

Winter holiday at a Villa in the Western Cape

Low season runs through winter and is generally regarded as beginning in May and ending on 30th September. During this time, short-term bookings are accepted and villa rental costs are low or easily negotiable. It’s the perfect time to escape the hubbub of your busy life, relax and figuratively hibernate for the holidays. You can also look forward to lower flight prices and other travel costs. With the usual crowds of holiday makers not being around, it’s also easier to access holiday spots, entertainment areas and other points of interest. You’ll be able to get the best seats at a restaurant and spend more relaxing.

Take a few days off work, make a long weekend of it and enjoy a winter holiday at a Villa in the Western Cape.

Trees for Tourism

A new initiative, Trees for Tourism (TfT) has been introduced for tourists, tourism operators and other companies and institutions affiliated with the tourism industry in South Africa, to counter-balance their tourism-related footprint. This incredible idea was launched a Indaba 2011 to help counteract our carbon footprint! For just R95 you can help save our precious planet!

TfT facilitates the ‘purchase’ by tourists and tourism-related companies of indigenous trees, to be planted in appropriate areas to recreate forest eco-systems.
By increasing the surface area of existing indigenous forests, the initiative aims to help restore the Cape’s biodiversity while countering the effects of climate change.
TfT has selected Platbos Conservation Trust as the operator for the selection and preparation of appropriate re-forestation sites, planting of trees and decade-long maintenance of the sites to protect the juvenile forests from fire and re-encroachment by alien invasive vegetation.

Our Amazing Country – South Africa

We are so privileged to be South African!!!

On Monday we had the chance to celebrate another birthday with one of the most incredible men in history – our Tata, Nelson Mandela!! Almost every school in South Africa sang Happy Birthday to him at exactly 08:05!! What an amazing achievement! Hopefully it will make it into the Guinness Book of World Records!

This weekend that has just past, Franschhoek put on an incredible event that did not fail to impress – The Bastille Day Festival! The town was lively, vibrant and well equipped to handle the crowds! The weather was absolutely perfect – Franschhoek could not have wished for better! I will definitely be visiting this festival next year!

Last week we were very spoilt and spent the day out with Proxima Shuttle and Tours who whisked us off on an incredible wine tour!! Again the weather played its part! We started off at JC Le Roux in Stellenbosch – what a treat! This sparkling wine tasting comes highly recommended! You can choose from pairing the sparkling wine with marshmallows, meringue or nougat – a very interesting combination! I could have spent the whole day there! We continued on our travels and stopped at Fairview for cheese and wine tasting and lunch! I would highly recommend Fairview to all cheese lovers!! The variety of cheeses were incredible and very reasonably priced!

What a wonderful day spent out and about in our beautiful city! Cape Town has so much to offer – from the mountains, to the beaches, to the wine farms, to wonderful shopping experiences and for the more adventurous our wonderful topless bus tours. The list is endless………

Happy Birthday Tata!

We are so thankful to share another birthday with you!

Thank you for teaching us about forgiveness, love, vision, courage, trust, humility and the oneness of humanity!

Cape Town City Bowl A Must For Foodies

The Mother City is known for her fresh and organic food markets and the new City Bowl Market on Hope makes for a wonderful addition to the extensive list.

Held each Saturday in a gorgeous old building on 14 Hope Street in the peaceful suburb of Gardens, the market is a delicious showcase of some of the best fresh produce, flowers and homemade delicacies in town.

Spend the day meandering between stalls laden with tasty goodies like oysters, champagne, crepes, sushi, croissants and more. From creamy cheeses and flavoursome curries to sweet, homemade chocolate, you’ll find it all at the City Bowl Market.

Another selling point is the low prices for veggies (tomatoes and potatoes for as little as R5!) and if you’re feeling a bit parched, there is a lovely bar upstairs where you can quench your thirst.

Traders include nut and dried fruit connoisseur By Nature, authentic Indian purveyor 25 Rupees, Saszali Chocolates and boutique caterer Sweetie Pie, who were all handpicked to trade at the market.

Shopping or browsing here is also a wonderful opportunity for quality family time as there is plenty to keep the little ones entertained from the huge garden to the jungle gym.
Be sure to take a peek at the jewellery on display too like the beautiful designs of Spirit Jewellery – you’re sure to find something sparkly that you’ll love.

The City Bowl Market on Hope is held each Saturday. For more info please visit www.citybowlmarket.co.za.
